Just had a 4100 hydro with loader and rotary cutter delivered. and am operating according to manual (RPM at 2860) When in motion a loud groaning sound is made almost like driving a vehicle with an emergency brake on. The brake hand lever is released and the tractor seems to move freely enough. The sound is loudest in high range. Any comments or insights would be appreciated. I don't recall the hearing that on the unit I tried out (mine had to be ordered). I am familiar with lots of power equipment and I am not at all comfortable with this sound. The delivery guy told me they all sound that way but also told me he had only been at the dealership for 5 weeks and my tractor was the first one he got to set up ( YIKES!!!)

Of course, I don't know what yours sounds like, but I guess all of them do make some "funny" growling sounds. I've got my second Kubota and they've both had different sounding growls from the hydro in different ranges, but never a problem. In other words, I don't know, but suspect yours is normal. ....

Bird, thanks for taking the time to reply. Turns out the parking brake was hung up. Hand lever released but pedal movement was restricted Got it freed up but the dealership sent a longtime service tech out on saturday just to be sure. 43 miles one way. We checked all the linkage adjustments by the shop manual and he concluded the delivery guy got a little overzealous on the brake when he secured the tractor for delivery (that includes the paint that got scraped with the binder chain). Went on later that day to rake out about 3/4 of an acre of recently bulldozed ground that the rains had had rutted up. Been raining ever since, supposed to keep raining to thurs. ....

Aaah, now I know what yours sounded like; kind of like mine sounds if I take off and forget to release the park brake. I've gotten used to that sound enough that I never go more than a foot or so before realizing what it is nowadays. ....

Hope you are having fun with the 4100....that is my personal favorite in the 4000 series JDs. I was wondering if it was the brake! At least a couple of times a year I succeed in driving around with the brakes on. That noise is real helpful, but you can't always count on it. As the brakes wear in, they won't make so much noise - sometimes none. On my old pickup truck I put a dash light in to tell me when the emergency brake was on. Guess this would be a good idea on my tractors as well. ....

Yea, I hope the delivery guy figures that out too. They told me that "he used to be a furnace guy". What that has to do with tractors I don't know. The key was in the pedal travel. Even with the lever released there was less than an inch of movement at the brake pedal. Now that its working right there is a lot more pedal travel. New question: Any one using a bucket tooth bar? I see that there are different styles of teeth used. Is one type any better than another? There are a lot of rocks and stones in the material I need to dig. ....

Just received my JD4100 (loader and 54"mower) 1 1/2 weeks ago (currently under 10 hours). I also experienced the grinding sound; the brake was released. Perhaps I should check with the dealer. I found that the grinding was there in low and high range if the engine speed was too low. At proper engine speed I still get the sound in high range, although it seems to go away once I am up to traveling speed. Do you more experienced users think I should talk to the dealer? ....
